Walk in and receive your advanced health screening at the Nishkam Healthcare Centre!

We invite you to get a free advanced health check at the Nishkam Healthcare Centre throughout Monday to Friday from 8am-3pm. Open to all aged 18 - 85, these health checks include:

  • Blood pressure

  • Height and weight

  • Blood tests

  • Cholesterol

  • ECG

  • Diabetes

The screening is being done as a part of the South Asia Biobank (LOLIPOP 100K) Study, led by Professors J S Kooner and J Chambers, to help prevent heart attack, diabetes, and cancer in our communities. To take part, visit this website link to make an appointment. Alternatively, you can also walk into the Centre for a health screening, without booking an appointment. A detailed report will be given to those who have taken part after the screening has taken place.

This study, granted by the Wellcome Trust and overseen by Imperial College, Medical Research Council and National Institute of Health Research, aims to understand why South Asians are at high risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other critical illnesses. Your participation in the study will transform research today and benefit tomorrow’s health among millions of South Asians worldwide.

Much progress in medical science has been made in the past five decades but this has not provided answers to why South Asians remain at such high risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other critical illnesses compared to other populations.

To date, most large-scale studies have largely recruited people of European ancestry. This lack of diversity in research hinders our understanding of reasons why populations such as South Asians are more susceptible to certain illnesses.

On the launch of the health screenings, Dr Manvir Kaur Hayer, Chair at the Nishkam Healthcare Centre, said: “We are delighted to be able to support Professor Jaswant Kooner [Principal Investigator for the project] and his team and his team with this important study, which will provide advanced health screenings for the local community, as well us informing our future healthcare.

“Accessing health services since the pandemic has been difficult for the local community, and these screenings will help people to be able to assess and monitor their health.”
